Taking a Look at the Legendary Sweaters of Lady Diana Spencer

When we think of Princess Diana, most of us don’t just see her in her best gowns and dresses, but also the clothing she’d be seen in every day and in the streets of London. The Princess of Wales had more than just a few iconic outfits that would turn her into a style icon, and perhaps one aspect of the wardrobe of Princess Diana that truly rung in the 1980s was her vast sweater collection.

While much of her clothing choices have since become legendary, Princess Diana’s sweater outfits were when her personal style game really shined through, with many people instantly remembering at least one of such outfits Diana put together. Let’s take a look back at a few of the statement sweaters the late princess donned.

The Balmoral Sweater

Even in her early years before officially becoming a royal, Princess Diana was already being noticed for her style and for wearing some standout designs. Here was a young Diana in a strikingly colourful sweater during a photocall with Prince Charles on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland before their wedding.

The “I’m a Luxury” Sweater

Princess Diana’s sweaters weren’t just a fashion statement, but they were also a reflection of her humour. Diana can be seen here with young Princes William and Harry sporting a statement sweatshirt that states, front to back, “I’M A LUXURY FEW CAN AFFORD.” Like another sweater on this list, you can now shop a replica of this iconic piece through streetwear brand Rowing Blazers as an homage to the Princess of Wales.

Prince Charles Polo Match Sweater

Princess Diana was often spotted at polo matches to support Prince Charles, where she’d also be seen wearing some great fashion. And while Diana sported plenty of sweaters with interesting designs, this piece featuring a large print of polo players on the front as she’s hand in hand with Prince Harry and with William in tow is a fun little homage to the sport.

The Belted Sweater

While Princess Diana wore a lot of sweaters with standout prints on her off days, she could also easily dress up the fall essentials. We could easily see Diana wearing this with some jeans and trainers, but she gave this printed blue sweater an instantly smarter touch with a cinching belt at the waist.

The Koala Sweater

The sweaters of Princess Diana were a refreshing change of pace from the frilly gowns and blazers of most royals. This koala sweater the Princess of Wales wore while pregnant was a fun casual choice that we can’t imagine any other royal wearing today.

The Jewel Sweater

Princess Diana wore this interesting sweater as she dropped Prince Harry off on his first day of school in 1989. We also think this would make for a super fun yet classy sweater for Christmas time.

The Dainty Sweater

Princess Diana had a sweater for nearly any occasion it seems. Diana can be seen in a photo with her family in front of a field of flowers wearing an equally floral but daintier design.

The Diamond Sweater

Perhaps one of the more glaringly 80s outfits she wore, Princess Diana matches her black and white diamond cardigan that already packs quite a punch with a ruffled bib top and high-waisted skirt.

The Black Sheep Sweater

Princess Diana was known for communicating her feelings through her fashion, and perhaps one of the most memorable ways she did so was with this black sheep jumper, a not-so-subtle way of telling the public just how much like a black sheep she was feeling within the royal family.

The black sheep sweater, which is now a part of V&A’s permanent collection, was originally created by Warm & Wonderful by the brand’s original designers, Joanna Osborne and Sally Muir. Streetwear brand Rowing Blazers would later recreate the iconic sweater with actress Emma Corrin donning it on the fourth season of The Crown.

Final Note

Known for her style just as much as her beauty, intelligence, and kindness, Lady Diana Spencer was an icon in more ways than one. When it came to the casual outfits she wore, plenty of her looks became trendsetting as they were easy for anyone to replicate and take inspiration from today. Whether you loved her for her giant gowns or her joyful sweaters, the fashion of Princess Diana is undeniably unforgettable.
