In celebration of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s third wedding anniversary, also known as the leather anniversary, the renowned animal rights organization, PETA, sent them a unique and animal-friendly gift.
As Meghan often dons Vejas, a French vegan brand, for her casual footwear, PETA saw this as an opportunity to present the Sussex couple with a vegan leather alternative.
The gift consisted of two pairs of Adidas vegan sneakers, a stylish and sustainable shoe from the brand’s Stan Smith collection.
In a heartfelt letter accompanying the sneakers, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk expressed admiration for the couple’s dedication to animals and the environment.
In the same letter, Newkirk highlighted the devastating impact of the leather industry, which takes the lives of over a billion animals annually and is ranked as the most polluting material in the fashion world.
The chemicals used in leather tanning, such as cyanide and formaldehyde, pose safety risks, leading to restrictions in many countries.
Beyond environmental concerns, leather production also raises serious animal welfare issues. A recent PETA investigation exposed cruel practices, revealing that cows and bulls are subjected to electric shocks, beatings, and branding on their faces before being killed for their skin.
PETA’s special gift, the Adidas vegan sneakers in cloud white and green Stan Smith, represent a sustainable choice in line with PETA’s mission and the couple’s values.
An alternative to animal-derived ingredients, the sneakers are proudly crafted with a vegan upper and an outsole made from rubber waste.
They embody a style that is conscious of the planet’s well-being while maintaining the timeless appeal and iconic style of the Stan Smith collection.
Harry and Meghan exchanged vows on May 19, 2018, at Windsor Castle, and as they embark on their new life in California, PETA hopes to inspire Harry and Meghan with a thoughtful gift to embrace cruelty-free fashion even more.
